Privacy Policy

The Unicorn Project is run by Unicorn Project LLC (“we”, “us”). This policy covers unicornandmatchmaker.com, the member app at app.unicornandmatchmaker.com, and The Unicorn Project mobile app for iOS and Android.

It is written to be read. Where a section is a promise about how the software behaves, it describes what the software actually does.

What we collect

When you apply

The application form asks for, and we store: your name, age, gender, the gender you are looking for, ZIP code, email address and phone number; your ranking of what you value and what you want in a partner; and your written answers about the partner you are looking for, what you will compromise on, how you handle conflict, what you are passionate about, and anything else you choose to tell us. You may also upload one photo.

Two fields — race and religion — are sensitive, and both are optional. We ask because some members want to be matched with someone who shares their background and have told us so. If you leave them blank, you are matched on everything else. We do not use them to exclude anyone from consideration.

If you join the couples waitlist

Your name, age, email address, phone number, your partner’s phone number, and how long you have been together.

When you use the member app or the mobile app

Your matches and whether you accepted or passed; the messages you send to a match; the times you say you are free and the venues and date preferences you pick; the feedback you leave after a date; challenges you complete; and any report or block you file. If you turn on notifications, we store a push token for that device.

Automatically

Your IP address, used to rate-limit the application form so it cannot be flooded. Google reCAPTCHA runs on both forms to tell people from bots, and Google receives data about that interaction under its own privacy policy. Our hosting providers keep short-lived server logs.

That is the whole list. There is no analytics on this site. No Google Analytics, no advertising pixel, no session recorder, no third-party tracker of any kind — the site’s Content-Security-Policy would block one if it were added, which is a technical guarantee rather than a promise.

Why we collect it

We do not use your information to train advertising models, and we do not build a profile of you for anyone else’s benefit.

Who can see it

The companies that run our infrastructure

These process data on our behalf, under contract, and only to provide their service to us:

We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or where it is necessary to protect someone’s safety.

Your photo

Your photo is resized and converted before it is stored, under a random filename that cannot be guessed. Inside the product it is shown to your matchmaker and to the person you are matched with, and to nobody else: it is not indexed by search engines, not attached to any public page, and not shown to other members. It is served over a plain link rather than an expiring one, so anyone you send that link to could open it — we do not publish it anywhere, and treat it as private, but it is not sealed.

How long we keep it

We keep your information while your account is open, and afterwards only where we have to — for example, a record that a report was filed, so a blocked person cannot simply return. Server logs are short-lived. Deletion is covered below.

Deleting your account

You can delete your account yourself: in the mobile app, open Profile → Delete account. On the web, or if you would rather we did it, email unicorn.and.matchmaker@gmail.com and we will do it within 30 days.

Deleting removes your name, email address, phone number and every answer you gave on your application, and takes your photo off your profile immediately. It cancels any live match, and it clears your availability, venue and date preferences, your completed challenges, and the content of the messages and date feedback you wrote. Your sign-in is destroyed and the email address is released, so the account cannot be reached again. The stored image file itself is purged within 30 days.

Two things deliberately survive, and you should know about both:

Backups are kept for a short period for disaster recovery and age out on their own schedule.

Your rights

Wherever you live, you can ask us to show you what we hold, correct it, delete it, or send you a copy. Email unicorn.and.matchmaker@gmail.com and we will respond within 30 days. We will not treat you differently for asking.

If you are in California, that includes the rights to know, delete, correct and to opt out of sale or sharing — and there is nothing to opt out of, because we do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined. If you are in the UK or the EU, our bases for processing are your consent (for the optional sensitive fields, which you can withdraw at any time), the performance of our agreement with you, and our legitimate interest in keeping the service safe and working; you also have the right to complain to your data protection authority.

Security

Traffic is encrypted in transit and data is encrypted at rest. Access to member data is restricted at the database level, so one member’s account cannot read another’s. Photo uploads are checked by type and size. Administrative access is limited to the matchmaker.

No system is perfect, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise.

Children

The Unicorn Project is for adults. You must be 18 or older to apply or to use the apps. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18, and we delete it if we discover we have.

Changes to this policy

If we change it, we will update the date at the top. If a change materially affects what we do with information you have already given us, we will email you before it takes effect.
